Modica, President 2004 - 2006
Florida Association of Public Art Administrators
It is an exciting time to be involved
in public art - statewide, nationally and internationally. All of us
in the field are pleased to be part of a profession that puts art
out in the spaces where people live their public lives. We are very
aware of national and worldwide trends but are, of course,
especially concerned with finding the most interesting artwork for
our own communities.
Currently, there are 35 communities
in Florida that have public art programs and new ones are being
added every year. Our state's first public art program was developed
in 1973 in Miami. In subsequent years, other cities and counties
recognized the value of public art in enhancing their public
buildings and streetscapes.
As more and more Florida communities
realized the social and economic value of establishing a public art
program, there was a greater need for learning and networking among
those working as public art professionals. The Florida Association
of Public Art Administrators directly addresses that that need.
FAPAA gives members an opportunity to
know and network with their colleagues, to stay informed of national
standards and to visit public art installations around the state.
Annual meetings also provide a forum to discuss current issues and
various topics in-depth and in-person. Recent topics have included
master plans, de-accession policies & practices, education
programs, sales tax, donations, Public Art in Historic Districts,
and Public Art & Memorials. Shared statewide, these issues
provide a common ground for dialogue.
We invite all those interested in
public art in Florida to join our association of dynamic, committed
and creative individuals.
