(position vacant), PAD Program Administrator

The Broward County Public Art and Design Program allocates two percent (2%) of the total new construction budget for Broward County government facilities for commissioned artists to provide design expertise, and to create artworks within a broad range of capital improvement projects.

The purpose of the program is to contribute to the enhancement of urban design through the creation of commissioned works of art that create a sense of place, that improve the visual environment for the citizens of Broward County and that advance the missions of the County departments where the projects reside.
Commissioned artworks are the result of a dynamic interaction between selected artists and interested constituent groups during the design stages of the projects.

Established in 1979, Florida's statewide percent-for-art program acquires artwork for new public facilities built with state funds. It requires that up to .5% of the construction appropriation be set aside to acquire artwork for permanent display in the public areas in, on or around that facility. This includes construction at the state universities and colleges. Since the program's beginnings in 1979, over 1,000 works of art have been purchased or commissioned and placed in public spaces.

Projects are periodically advertised to artists on their web site at www.Florida-Arts.org/programs/statebuildings

Ann Wykell, Manager, Cultural Affairs

The City of St. Petersburg's Art in Public Places Program is funded through a "per cent for art" ordinance, passed in 1990. The Public Art Commission seeks to acquire high quality works of art, which "connect" with residents and visitors, help to develop the community's sense of identity and provide opportunities for informed community dialog.
Its public art includes the work of many of Florida's outstanding artists and is on display in public buildings, parks, recreation centers, water towers, highway entrance ramps, fire stations and libraries. With work in every corner of the city, public art is available to residents and visitors. The diversity of artwork ranges from found-object sculptures to paintings of Florida flora and fauna; from site-specific neon sculpture to realistic bronze, and includes photography, textiles, stained glass, murals and ceramics.

The collection is considers to be a civic resource and an expression of St. Petersburg's growing emphasis on its cultural identity. Learn more at http://www.stpete.org/publicart.htm
